One of the most common questions people ask our home builders when we first sit down with them is, “How do I get started?” While the answer is simple, it is also often the most difficult part of the custom home building process. In this blog, we’ll share some helpful information on the first thing you need to do in order to build a custom home.

How To Build a Custom Home: Getting Started

“I want to build a house, where do I start?” — if you have ever asked yourself or a home builder this question, you’re not alone. Building a custom home is a big decision and there are a lot of steps involved, so it’s common for people to not exactly know where to start. While dreaming of your open-layout kitchen or master suite is expected, the first real step of the custom home building process is to find land to build on. You can’t build a home if you don’t have a place to build it.

Tips for Finding a Lot to Build a Custom Home On

Choosing the ideal site on which to build your home is one of the most important decisions you will make throughout the entire home building process. To help ensure you make the best selection, here are a few different areas to consider as you search for the ideal lot.

  • General Area. Do you have a specific area in mind that you want to build your custom home? Having an idea of the county, zip code, town, or city of where you would like to live will make it easier to search for the right lot.
  • Urban, Suburban, or Rural. Some people prefer to live closer to a city while others prefer to live farther away. Typically, lots closer to the city will cost more and may have longer waiting periods compared to one that is in an outlying suburb or rural area.
  • Commuting Distances. Your commuting times can add up. If commuting distances are important to you, look for an available lot that has a reasonable commute to work, schools, shopping, etc. For some people, the walkability of an area is an important consideration, too.
  • Lifestyle. Your lifestyle is another important feature to think about when choosing a lot to build a home on. Do you want to be near a lake or closer to natural areas rather than the bright city lights? Do you want your pets to have room to roam freely? All of these are important to think about.

Of course, there are a lot of other factors that need to be considered when looking for land to build a home on, such as how big the land is, how wide and deep it is, whether or not it has a septic system, and so much more. These are all things that need to be known in order to effectively carry out a custom home design.
