Tips for Designing a Modern Bathroom

Just like the kitchen, the master bathroom suite is a space that anyone building a modern custom home will want to spend some time thinking about in terms of layout and design. The right choices will ensure that you have a spa-like space to get ready for each day and to retreat to after they end for some relaxation. Here are some suggestions:

Keep It Simple

What is one of the primary pillars of modern home design? Simplicity. From subtle patterns to more muted colors, there are various ways that you can streamline your bathroom to make it more cohesive. The layout should be open to avoid overcrowding the room. Opt for storage solutions that are both minimalist and functional. When designing a modern bathroom, the goal should be to make the space as simple and as uncomplicated as possible.

Embrace Natural Light

Natural light is a natural mood booster — who couldn’t use that on a Monday morning? Not all master bathrooms have windows, so take advantage of the opportunity to incorporate some windows when designing the space. If privacy is a concern, there are different options available. You can install sheer curtains that will increase privacy but still allow natural light to filter through. To maximize the natural light impact, incorporate a shower with clear glass and position mirrors in a way that natural light will be able to bounce off them and brighten up the room.

Don’t Forget About Artificial Lighting

When natural light is not available, you want to make sure that your bathroom will have adequate lighting. Ensure that you incorporate task lighting and mirror lighting and that the fixtures are correctly placed to avoid throwing shadows. Mood lighting is a great way to create a more relaxing atmosphere. When trying to decide what lighting to incorporate into your space, here is a good rule of thumb to keep in mind; accent lighting adds depth to the room, ambient lighting illuminates, and properly-placed task lighting improves the functionality of the space.

Choose the Right Vanity

The vanity is typically the centerpiece of a bathroom. Vanities with sleek lines and clean design complement a modern-style bathroom. Wall-mounted floating vanities that appear to “float” above the floor are very popular in modern bathroom design. This type of bathroom vanity creates a light, streamlined look that sets the tone for the rest of the space. For the vanity countertop, consider engineered quartz, marble, granite, or a solid-surface material in a neutral hue. Add a pair of undermount sinks to create a seamless and clean look.

Add Sleek Tile

When it comes to designing the master bathroom for your modern custom home, a little bit of tile can go a long way. Tile serves a distinctly utilitarian purpose in bathrooms: It protects walls from water damage and toothpaste smudges alike. But just because bathroom tiles are practical doesn’t mean they can’t look good, too. Whether you want to give your master bedroom a spa-like feeling or add some invigorating depth to the space, choosing tile with a splash of color, fresh pattern, or unconventional shape can get the job done.

The most important thing to remember when designing your bathroom during the custom modern home building process is to make it a space that will bring you joy. We get it, the bathroom isn’t the most exciting room in the house, but it certainly can be if it’s designed right.
